A vet clinic in Dunedin that truly cares about your pets’ well-being Alistair Newbould set up his vet clinic in Dunedin in January 1989, with the philosophy that every pet deserves quality veterinary care, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Originally called Dunedin South Veterinary, the practice is now called Humanimals, because the way we treat our animals is the way we treat each other. Our vets – Michelle Mills, Liz Paton, Kristin Townsend and Anah Bannister – and our team of veterinary nurses are dedicated to caring for the pets of Dunedin.
What began as an overgrown paddock on the north side of Geraldine is now a busy vet clinic servicing both companion animals and livestock. The section on ‘Honey Corner’ was previously an empty section with a few resident woolly lawnmowers. After some massive family working bees, the transformation began. Conscious of providing work to local trades-people we used only Geraldine contractors for everything from the landscaping to the plastering of our purpose built clinic. Work was completed in the autumn of 2013 and we officially opened on 5th April of that year.

The impressive brick and concrete building we work out of is the old Eltham Courthouse, opened in 1908 by then Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward. It was purchased by this organisation after closure by the Department of Justice in 1951 and is now classified as an Historic Place. Our fully stocked shelves contain all your animal health needs for large and small animals. Open plan, and easy to find what you're looking for, there is always someone ready to help you decide what you need. We recently (winter 2019) renovated and earthquake strengthened our reception, retail and consultation area in the old historic courthouse building and added an extra consultation room to allow for the increasing amount of companion animal work we are doing.
You might call our vision simple, we hope you do. Simple can be defined as 'easily understood and presenting no difficulties'. This is how we want our clients to define their relationships with us, and how we see ourselves. Our simple approach focuses on performance across the farm with confident veterinary medicine and advice, fast response times and effective follow-up service. It is this approach that has seen this business go from working out of the back of a truck in 2010 to being the leading animal health provider on the East Coast today. It may have also contributed to East Coast Farm Vets being named the Gisborne Westpac Business Awards Supreme Award Winner in 2012 and category winner in 2015, but for the most part, that came down to our tremendous staff.
